Millhaus Apartments Complete Exterior Masonry Restoration

Upton, MA - Knollmeyer Building Corp. is wrapping up the complete restoration of an old hat factory. During the mid 1800’s this complex, of 8 interconnected buildings, was the largest straw hat factory in the world. Abandoned in the 50’s and converted to elderly housing in the 70’s this historically significant structure was in serious need of masonry, carpentry, and roofing repairs. Developed in conjunction with The Architectural Team, the scope of the project includes complete repointing of the brick, and granite façade with a custom made mortar mix designed by project engineers Thompson & Lichtner in concert with the National Park guidelines and manufactured, tinted, and premixed by Quikrete Corp. The wood cornices, crowns, and dentils were reproduced in a millwork shop to their original specifications from African Sapele wood. Slate roofing was removed and replaced with Lamarite 50 year roofing tiles. New copper cornice and roofing materials were manufactured offsite and soldered in place to match the original metal details.
